It was established by the famous mathematician and educationist Sir. Asutosh Mukherjee in the year 1916. It is affiliated by the University of Calcutta. The college was known as South Suburban College. After the death of the founder in 1924, the college was renamed after him.
Asutosh College Kolkata is located at Kalighat, one of the oldest places in the south of the city. The college has forty thousand square feet premise and more than fifty classrooms. It provides a quality education to about 4000 students. The college won Mother Teresa International Award for outstanding achievement and contribution in the field of Best College of the Year %u2013 2012.

The college provides Under Graduate, Graduate and Post Graduation courses along with M.A./M.Sc. Distance Education programmes. Asutosh College Kolkata admission starts in the mid of the year. Admission is given to the individuals on their merit basis. There are various courses offered by the college. Students are given a choice to select the field and courses. The education body is handled by a staff of highly educated professors. Each department of the education body has its own library. It also has a separate gymnasium where students can exercise daily. It is the only college in the city that provides hostel facilities. The Asutosh Memorial Hall, situated in the college building is used for various cultural and academic functions. There is a separate Seminar hall of the college where different lectures and academic workshops are undertaken for the students. The hall is well-equipped with high-end facilities and can accommodate around 200 people at a time. The Asutosh College Training Centre (ACTC) provides Computer Training and Higher Services Training. Every year the Placement Cell of the college organizes campus interviews to provide jobs to the students. The campus interviews are taken up by the top national and multi-national companies.
